A problem occurred the other day when a DVD video project (Video TS) burned with K3b was unreadable within Windows. When inserted on a windows machine, it would show as a blank DVD, yet on my Ubuntu desktop it showed the Audio TS and Video TS folders and played with no problems what so ever.

Brian came to (SoSLUG one of our regulars), us last week with two possible methods for the installation of Firefox3, we thought we would try them out for the benefit of the many of our members that have one. We came across this interesting problem with Hardy Heron the other day, we wanted to insert a USB flash drive into a computer running the latest Linux distro and access it's contents. It obviously tried to mount the device into the file system but something was stopping it.

Having now moved almost everything to Debian Etch, I'm now spending more time in this environment and hence using Iceweasel as my primary bowser. However, although I spent a little time getting various multimedia plugins to work in Iceweasel, I came across an annoyance when using links from various emails I receive within IceDove.

Backup and Restore

A hard disk can be composed of many things but essentially the only data it holds is a series of 0 (zero's) and 1 (ones) most of what is contained within a hard disk therefore is empty space ie a 0 (zero's) that being the case it should be possible to design an algorithm that takes advantage of this and save only the data needed, well we have news for you such an application is already available.

DVD & DVD Encryption

Getting commercial (encrypted) DVD's to play in Ubuntu or any Linux distribution for that matter out of the box will be difficult. It is difficult not because Linux is unable but because licensing laws prevent the playing of DVD encrypted or CSS encrypted software. All DVD movies are usually produced with CSS encryption which is why they are difficult or impossible to play without suitable decryption software.

This project appears to be abandoned, with newer distros now including automatic search capabilities. It remains here for archival purposes only.

Introduction

Much has been written recently about the search facilities in the new Microsoft® Windows Vista and how wonderful it is. Well, I'm here to tell you that Kubuntu and Ubuntu have an equally good search function that will hold its own against alternative systems.
