Linux Distro & Flavours

Taking the Mystery Out of Linux Distributions

Linux distributions tend to be constructed for an intended purpose it's the same Linux under the skin with almost exactly the same commands and applications. We say almost because it depends on what the distribution flavour this was originally based.

For example some of the commands in Gentoo will not all work on Debian or Debian distro's such as Ubuntu. In contrast because LinuxMint is a flavour of Ubuntu and Ubuntu a flavour of Debian, all the commands available for these distro's will work with one another.

One of the greatest advantages of Linux is that if you as an individual or group for that matter, if you are not happy with a flavour of Linux that you have adopted then you can change it, or persuade someone to change it for you, try that with Micro$oft. People change things about Linux and Linux flavours because their is usually something that bugs and irritates them about it. Perhaps because it is difficult to install or because the world of applications hasn't quite caught up to Linux, leaving basic functionality for the professional editor / programmer to contend with.
