SoSLUG is hosting Software Freedom Day at three locations in Southend High Street "The Royals" and "Victoria Circus" this is an event to promote Free Libre Open Source Software on Saturday 17th September. We are looking for people who have time on there hands to support, provide information and distribute Free software, run workshops and demonstrate free software media projects.
In addition SoSLUG would also like to act as a collection point and drop in clinic for redundant Laptops, that members of the public no longer have a use for. Cannibalising hardware for one laptop to get another working, here the intention being to use and demonstrate and acquire Laptops specifically for a project called the Zero Dollar Laptop Project (http://zdlp.soslug.org), which SoSLUG, FurtherField, Digital Exploration Centre and Southend YMCA are organisational partners, I think Graham Harwood of YoHa an Artist group may also lend there support.
We will be relying on our network of Linux User Groups and Artist friends help make this a weekend to remember. Using the opportunity to provide solid information and support for software alternatives to that of commercial proprietary applications. To this end we seek volunteers to demonstrate Free Software in terms of Audio, Video, Game and Office applications to the public along with media projects that may in development that might endorse the potential of free software. If you would like to run a workshop whilst all this is taking place that would be fine to. I will be asking as many of our members from SoSLUG to attend as possible on these two days.
If you can help or would like to contribute we are holding meetings each Monday at the Temporary Art Project in the evenings from 29th August at 8pm to discuss your and our ideas, you can obtain the address from the http://SoSLUG.org website, or communicate via email with me.
