I have been into Linux for about 5 years and have dabbled with Slackware, Gentoo and more latterly Debian based distributions among others. Currently I am using ubuntu on my desktop and the lighter weight xubuntu on the laptop. I am a home dad and in another life I was an HR Consultant specialising in development and resourcing and definitely not a programmer, but I have written and ammended several bash scripts; one is a backup system which encrypts a bunch of files and then sends them to a server by ftp every Sunday night at 8:30pm. In addition I have created a blog using Drupal which you can find here. SoSLUG is a great place to spend a few hours each week learning about Linux and don't worry you'll get all the 'geek speak' or 'tech banter' that you'll want or need. |

Derek | A devoted Linux ethusiast for many years now, I have always loved Linux ever since being introduced to it by a friend back as long ago as the 1990's, SoSLUG was originaly constructed to upgrade my own knowlege, at the time there was no other Linux user group within close proxcimity with the undeniable support and assistance from many of my friends within the user group, I now devote much of my own time and energy helping others understand Linux. | |

| Paul | I first started "fiddling" with Linux in 2002 (Redhat), but in those days, while it was usable, it was still fairly "geeky", so I tended to come and go!
Further usage of Mandrake (now Mandriva) gave me a little more insight (and confidence), but still I was switching between operating systems. Xandros was a breakthrough, and the first Linux distro I found that needed very little tweaking. It became a solid favorite of mine, but eventually I found it restrictive. Ubuntu and Kubuntu were next in line along with "raw" Debian, all of which I liked. My latest favorite is PCLinuxOS, and this I'm now using almost exclusively. I still consider myself a novice user and came to SoSLUG to further my knowledge. Come and join us and I'll promise to speak to you in plain language! "Power to the people" via Linux! |

| Gary (Tailzer) | Tried to migrate to Linux several times over the last 10 or so years, but finaly made it when I discovered Ubunutu and got some support from my fellow SoSLUGgers. I like things to run nicely and consider haveing to go to the command line a bug in the system, having said that I have been known to sit on the command line for hours just to get compiz working (always worth showing off to windows users)! I also like to dabble in GIMP and tyring to port my knowledge of Photoshop over to it. Lastly I like hardware, especially if it can be modded, from building my own colour MP3 player before there were any commercially available colour ones, to my current project of seeing how much you can build into an ASUS Eee pc. Come and say hi, just dont get me started on VIM! |
