Gimp Animation
GIMP animation - getting started
GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program and is an open source software application covered by the General Public License [GPL]. The GPL provides users with the freedom to access and alter the source code that makes up computer programs. The GIMP is suitable for a variety of image manipulation tasks, including photo retouching, but in this article we'll concentrate on some of the basic animation facilities.
Import PDF into Open Office then edit
Can you open a PDF in Office - No!!!
Introduction
What do you mean you can not edit a PDF document in Office, this certainly used to be the case! The only way SoSLUG previously found to edit a PDF file and belive you me we looked, you first needed to import any PDF into "Inkscape" and convert, whilst you can edit the file and alter it you needed to save the file either as an "Inkscape" drawing or save back to a PDF by exporting. Whilst there is little problem with this if you needed to continually edit the file it can be a bit of a pain.
Migrating from Thunderbird Vers 2 to Ver 3
Upgrading Version 2 Thunderbird to Version 3
Introduction
If you have updated recently your version of Linux Distro in Ubuntu, Mint and others you might have hit on a couple of upgrade problems associated with the Thunderbird Version released with the distro. This howto covers the instructions needed to overcome these problems. At least one of the fixes is very simple the other is only slightly more complex.
Installing the latest OpenOffice Suite
Installing the latest OpenOffice Suite for Debian and Ubuntu Systems
Introduction
Most of the time you will want to use the installed package manager with the likes of (apt-get or Synaptic) to use for Open Office, using this method whilst it ensures an easy to install solution does not give you the latest version installation, the latest version is harder to install partly because it comes as a tarball and there are several individual Debian packages within it and apparently no setup script of obvious means of installation.
Thunderbird Install
Installation of Thunderbird Mail and Opening an Account
I have recently updated my laptop to run with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and in doing so opened some accounts in Thunderbird which I have installed separately. I ran into one or two problems and thought it might be useful to describe the opening of an account, the problems and the manner of overcoming them.
Changing Window Control Icons
Changing Ubuntu Window Control Icons
One of the unusual features about the installation of Ubuntu 10.04 is the appearance of the window controls on the left hand side of a window. This makes life confusing for some of us because we are so used to these controls being on the right hand side.
Therefore I propose to set out below how these controls can be moved to the right hand side. In this workshop click on the drawings to open them.
Press Alt + F2 and a Run Application box appears as shown in Figure 1. Type into the box gconf-editor and press Run.
Create a CD label
Introduction
A friend of mine recently asked if I could recommend a Linux distro for him to load for one of his family. Of course, there are several mainstream distros that would fit the bill, but I've become rather fond of Linux Mint for new users swapping from Windows.
Although Mint uses gnome as it's desktop, its developers have created a nice menu, that Windows users will feel right at home with and of course, it's based on the Ubuntu family, which in turn uses the very solid Debian core.
Desktop and other miscellaneous applications
Desktop Applications
This section aims to list useful software by category that is not covered in the other software categories. In particular generic applications, such as Libre Office for example along with other general purpose software tools. Also listed are a number of Howto articles which may help a novice user, or even an experienced user, customise or install software to meet a specific need.
