Wiki Structure and Navigation

Navigation

First off you do not need to register to view anything on this site, nothing is blocked from your view all pages created are available for public scrutiny. Registration is only required if you wish to contribute to the wiki itself and want others to comment on your experiences and techniques.

There are now some 15 topics which may or may not offer additional links to this or other sites, as you enter our site displayed on the main page is a collection of our most recent content. Recent content is nearly always displayed towards the top of the page. Selecting a topic on the other hand refines the content to subject matter you are more interested in, most of the time an additional menu is provided for ease of navigation and other resources you might be interested in.

Registration

Before you can post articles to this site you will need to register.

Locate the option to Create new account these next two images should help find it.

Register Registration

The second image depicts the information we require of you, which amounts to an unused username (a usernane not previously used by someone else) and a real email address, so we can post to you the details of the account along with a cryptic password. Once you have received your email from us, use the password it comes with to access your account. We immediately suggest you change your password to something more meaningful to yourself, we of course advise you make a record of the new password you have set and keep it safe.

To circumvent fraudulent postings we have implemented a system called "Captcha" if or when you register you will need to enter the characters displayed in the image. The characters are case sensitive so the exact code will need to be registered with our site. This reduces fraudulent, distasteful or defamatory articles from being posted on this site. All entries articles and postings are treated this way for any content loaded to the site.

Your New Account

You have your new account on http://wiki.soslug.org otherwise you wouldn't be reading this. But how do you change your password for something else rather than what we give you. Well you could first look at your navigation menu that is immediately below the main Topics for the wiki site it will have the following attributes.

* Create content
* My account
* Main Page
* Views
* Statistics
* Log out

We will talk more about "Create content" in the entry below, for now we will look at "My account" and what you can do in it. First click on "My account" to open this section and examine its options we have three "View", "Edit" and "Track", the first tab View surprisingly enough offer no options but does display your history, well member since whatever date. "Edit" on the other hand is more useful and this is where you amongst other things change your password you can view the images below for a practical overview. You can also edit your email address I think although it is possible is restricted to admins and moderators. "Track" will dare you guess track your content and revisions as you post an article. Whilst you can post any article you want within reason provided it covers the subject matter, any abuse will not be tolerated, however instructive and informative post will rapidly gain our favor.

Creating a New Image Page

Under the Topics section you will find a menu structure under your own username.

When you create new wiki content you have two options available, Image and Wiki page both will allow you to create new wiki content and upload images or text on the fly to the server.

Looking at the Image above, a title you will see is needed along with the location of the file to be uploaded, the file can be any recognised image file format, but we suggest you use jpeg as a standard format these are easily understood by all browsers so you are maximising your audience by using jpeg images. We further suggest any image uploaded should be no greater than 1024 x 768 those that aren't will be reduced to that size.

What entries needs to be placed on this Image page

This page only needs three actions after you have logged in these are as follows:-

* A Title
* Location of file to be uploaded
* Press Submit

Although this page has provision for it, no other information is required to upload an image, as this site is used by both the young and the old and perhaps somewhere in between, we ask that any content that is uploaded is relevant to the site and has something to do with Linux. Any content that is not deemed not suitable will be removed.

Creating a New Wiki Page

Creating a wiki page is very similar to that of the above Image page and whilst you are presented with a large amount of instructions, in actual fact you need only provide a title for your page and enter the Topics that define your article placement and lastly the text information relevant to the article being posted. Finally Preview and or Submit your article.

* A Title
* Enter the topics from the menu that relate to this article (all text must be lower case and separated by comas)
* Enter text to be uploaded
* Press Submit

Upload

Submit your page and that is it your page is now posted to the wiki site.
